Vegan Makeup Brushes Or the Natural Option - Which Is Better?

For decades, makeup brushes have boiled down to choosing between natural or synthetic choices. Each one provides its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Synthetic makeup brushes use materials whose history dates back to World War II and have proven resilience, especially relative to natural makeup brushes. They also offer a range of other advantages.

Synthetic vs. Natural Brushes

Vegan or synthetic makeup brushes use nylon or other man-made  materials. Much of the time, these materials come from earth-friendly natural gas byproducts. Though naturally translucent or white, often times manufacturers dress them up in brilliant and beautiful colours.

Lacking a cuticle, they will not absorb certain makeups, such as creams or liquid products. Another feature of synthetic brushes lies in their flatness and ability to be cut precisely for specific applications, such as makeup.

Natural makeup brushes use different forms of animal hair in their creation. Their bristles naturally spread out in use, rather than sticking together in a mass. These brushes also contain natural cuticles that absorb oils and powdery pigments, giving them some advantage in blending products to create a seamless and natural-looking, non-blotchy appearance.

Cuticles on bristles, however, make the brushes difficult to keep clean. They also cannot be used effectively or efficiently for liquid or oily makeup. Like human hair, they also have a tendency to dry out, crack, and even break.

Vegan Makeup Brushes Benefits

One of the most common problems related to natural brushes lies in the difficulty of keeping them clean and resulting problems.  The cuticles of real hair create an uneven surface on the micro level. This means that the brushes pick up and retain more makeup, but also skin oils and other biological materials that provide perfect breeding grounds for bacteria.

If not thoroughly and properly cleaned once a week, natural brushes can cause skin problems, such as rashes or acne breakouts. Additionally, some users have allergies to certain kinds of animal hair.

On the other hand, synthetic/vegan options have a flat surface. They don't retain microbes that lead to skin irritation or infection. Since they don't

absorb materials from makeup and human skin or bacteria, vegan brushes also remain odor free for longer and have to be cleaned less often.

Synthetic makeup brushes also have more strength. Their filaments remain more resilient than natural hair, preventing the breaking and cracking that occur with natural makeup brushes.

Furthermore, the latest wave of synthetic brushes work much better with powders than those from years past, and powders are a huge part of many makeup looks today. When used with powder-based makeup, they are just as capable of providing that desired seamless blending effect as natural hair products.

Vegan Means No Animals Used

Finally, a number of women choose synthetic makeup brushes because they oppose animal use in makeup and makeup tools. They feel uncomfortable with any food or other product that incorporates animals. For them, synthetic makeup brushes gives them guilt-free tools for this essential morning routine.
